Daves Frequently Asked Questions
Questions, and answers, here I'll try and answer common questions concerning what I do, how I sell, and booking my services a photographer.
Who am I, and why?
Up until 2014 I was an I.T consultant, with some building facilities management thrown in, but manly dealing with computers, and network infrastructure. Thal all ended in July 2014 with a redundancy package.
Since 2008 I had reacquired my enthusiasm, and passion for photography after spending most of my adult life riding a bicycle. I packed up cycling competition as I needed to earn money to get on with normal life, so I got involved in the computer industry.
Photography started for me during secondary education with black, and white film. Cameras supplied by the school we as a group of kids with one camera would go out and learn the basics. I found the process fascinating, being able to capture a moment with a camera, then watching the image come to life in the school's darkroom on special paper.
Sadly for me I was slung off the course as I was a little slow with the theory concept of photography, but that didn't stop me when I left school.
That was ion the late seventies when digital was still a concept, video recorders was the boom.
So who is a Professional Photographer.
In a nutshell, a professional photographer is someone who earns money from their photography, be it for the news paper as a photojournalist, to a portrait photographer. If a photographer charges a client money for what they do, they are a professional.
What camera equipment do you use?
It doesn't really matter what equipment thats used as long as the end result is a photograph that tells the story.
I use Nikon cameras with Nikkor lenses.
I started off with Olympus cameras based on limited knowledge at the time. I soon realised that if I wanted to sell images to the public I would need to invest in better gear as the Olympus equipment was not good enough.
Do you do all types of Photography or just specialise in one area?
When I first started I just photographed cycling sport events, then I was approached by a cyclist who asked if I could photograph their wedding. Then the wedding photography started.
I now varied stuff, some portrait work, family portraits or individuals portraits, and very occasionally some football.
Architecture photography I don't do or Fashion. I would like to do some extreme sport if the opportunity presents itself.
You have a brilliant picture of me from a recent event, can I have it for my blog article I'm doing, I will make sure I credit you on the photo?
It is at the photographers discretion as weather they give away their photos. Most enthusiasts photographers will tend to give away their photos, as they are not making a living from photography.
As a full time photographer, giving images away with the photographers name on it , or being credited doesn't help pay the bills.
Ask yourself, would you work all day for nothing knowing you have bills to pay, and watch someone else profit from what you have done. It is harsh, but thats the way it is for the moment.
My cycling club is promoting an event, how do I book you, and how much do you charge?
